When a predator attack results in the death of his waterfowl, Morgan Gold - a Vermont poultry farmer - recruits the aid of livestock guardian dogs to protect his flock from further attacks but a new threat emerges from within the farm.

Set against the backdrop of Gold Shaw Farm’s rolling hills in Peacham, Vermont, this documentary follows Morgan’s real-life struggle to defend his ducks and geese after a series of mink attacks devastate the flock. Determined to keep his animals safe, he brings home a livestock guardian dog named Toby — a calm, capable guardian who quickly proves his worth.

A couple of years later, Morgan adds a second guardian dog, Abby, to share the workload. But when Abby’s instincts take a troubling turn, Morgan is forced to confront an unexpected challenge: protecting his birds not just from predators outside the fence, but from one within it.

Through moments of loss, learning, and laughter, Guardians of Gold Shaw Farm explores the delicate balance between trust and training, instinct and intention — and the deep responsibility that comes with caring for animals who depend on you.

In addition to the documentary, I filmed an introductory livestock guardian dog online course which can be viewed on abundanceplus.com (get a 10% discount by using coupon code GRASSFED10)
